Emerging Technologies 3

For my third emerging technology, I decided to play around with multiple tools available on the internet. It has taken me all semester to master some of these concepts and types of computer projects, but I have not given up yet! I have decided to go all out for this last one! Although I do have a Facebook and that I do know it is an option for an emerging technology, I will not be using the Facebook website for this project. Websites that I chose to use for this project is Survey Monkey, Photo Bucket, and Youtube. Most of these websites should be familiar to students in college but if not, then do not worry! These websites are extremely simple to work with and can boost your creativity in the future!

For the first portion of my third emerging technology, I have decided to have a theme of Spinach Dip. I chose this theme because it is almost summer time and this would be a great treat to have at a party, a gathering, or anywhere in general. Please take the Spinach Dip Survey by right clicking on the Blue Hyperlink, and click either "Open Link in New Tab" or "Open Link in New Window" so that you do not leave this blog page. The survey was made with the Survey Monkey tool and it was extremely simple to conquer. Once a user name is established, creating the survey is simple. All of the directions, step by step, are available on the website. If you cannot figure out how to create you own, please contact me by email ajbova@umail.iu.edu and I will gladly walk you through step by step until you have completed your masterpiece of a survey.

Once you have completed the Spinach Dip Survey and if you would like to know how to make you own spinach dip, please watch this How To Speech on Spinach Dip by right clicking on the Blue Hyperlink, and click either "Open Link in New Tab" or "Open Link in New Window" so that you do not leave this blog page. This video was taped in my speech class earlier this semester. It is considered a podcast and is currently displayed on my youtube account. Youtube is a tool where users can post their podcasts, webcasts, or videos so that the general public can view it.

Next, I decided to play around on Photobucket, a website which allows you to upload your own photos. Once uploaded, you are provided with several tools so that you can play around with your pictures. I have taken three Pictures from my computer, one of my fraternity brothers, one of my real brother (in my family) and I at a Colts game, and a picture of my female French Bulldog Paris. I will not tell you what I did to the pictures but I feel the results are fun to look at. Next, I uploaded a picture from my laptop, which is actually on this same blog page. The picture is located towards the bottom right of the blog page in the light blue box and is entitled Paris. I have taken that picture and played with it on photobucket so that I can show you a before and after shot of the same picture. Please look at the picture below entitles Paris, then once you have done so, Click Here. This website is a great website for people who love taking pictures or people who love to play around with pictures. I would strongly recommend it.

Just like the recent websites learned in this course, people need to establish a user name prior to using the website. Once a user name is established, users can upload photos from their phone, their computer, or from the world wide web. What is special about this tool is that users can alter their picture to their own preferences. Now there are several tools to use and ways to alter your pictures so take you time and play around on the website. In order to change a picture, users must upload their picture, click edit, then click on Effects, Decorate, Animations, Beautify, Distort, Layers, or Geek to explore the multiple options to change your picture. Options include turning your picture into a blue print, making you picture look like it was drawn in black and white or in color, you can make you picture a negative, or you can make it look like pop art. Once again, this website is very simple to use and follow and I would recommend it to my friends.

Much of the class has operated through a wiki system such as pbwiki. For those who do not know what a wiki is and would like to know what the definition of wiki told from the viewpoint of wikis, click here. The link takes you to Wikipedia, an online website that is entirely operated on wikis. The page is Wikipedia's definition of Wiki. Wikis are pages that can be not only accessed by anyone, but can be edited and updated by anybody. It is a collaborative group effort that can be compared to writing a paper for a class and having all of you classmates read, edit, and add suggestions to the paper. If I have somehow just confused you on the definition of Wiki, please Click Here so that you can get the definition from Dictionary.com. We have used a type of wiki in the classroom called PBwiki, which I am still working on mastering. I am still gaining knowledge on some of the concepts of the PBwiki website but after the summer I should be good to go and should have a further understanding of computer technology.

How to make a Podcast / Vodcast

For those who do know know what a Podcast is, according to Dictionary.com, a podcast is "a Web-based audio broadcast via an RSS feed, accessed by subscription over the Internet."

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/podcast

If you think about it, videos that I have posted onto facebook can be considered vodcasts, which is a video version of a podcast. To be completely honest, what a podcast is to me is still somewhat of a grey area. Everything can be on a podcast. When I was a student at Purdue, my biology professor recorded all of his lectures and put them in Podcast form so that his students can watch them for study or research purposes. I do need much more work on how to make a podcast and I do intend on reaching out towards my friends to understand how to properly make a podcast.

If one is interested in making a podcast, they should go to the following website.

Once I fully master the technique of Podcasts and Vodcasts I do expect to use them in the future for presentations.

Emerging Technologies 2. Photo Show

1. For my second emerging technologies assignment involving pictures, I chose to use the Photo Show application.

2. Photo Show is a website where if visitors choose to do so (after they create an account) can make a musical slideshow consisting of pictures uploaded from the user’s computer. The website is a great tool for organizing photos into groupings of various sorts so that they can be presented to a class, friends, co-workers, and family. It is useful because it takes the typical photo viewing programs and adds fun, color, and music to make it a much livelier slide show.

3. To be honest, although I am familiar with various photo applications both online and pre-installed on my computer, I selected the Photo Show application at random. Although the website is initially free, the free period is only a 30-day trial. The website is constantly asking you to upgrade if you want to do something other than the operations that come with the basic 30-day trial. This application was extremely simple to follow, although much patience is needed. There are multiple ways that you can upload a file with this application including uploading one at a time, multiple pictures at a time, or uploading pictures from Facebook. I find this program extremely simple and easy to use. I love taking pictures and have over 2000 pictures that I have taken on my computer. It was so easy to make one slideshow, which I decided to make two additional slide shows which should be fun for any viewer to follow. All three videos can be found by following the links on my blog or by simply going to the following website.

4. To make a slideshow, one first needs to create an account. After an account is created, click the link that says “Make a Photo Show.” Now you need to choose how you would like to upload photos. Since I only used the Basic Upload and the Batch Upload functions, I will only walk you through those.

a. If you click Basic Upload, you will have to select your pictures one picture at a time. Click Browse, and find the folder containing the pictures that you wish to upload. This is a slow process. Once all the pictures are selected as desired, and as long as they properly upload, you will need to click on the personalize button.

b. If you click Batch Upload, you will then need to click Add Photos. Just like the previous method, you will need to locate the folder containing the pictures that you wish upload. Unlike the previous option, you can select multiple pictures at once, or click pictures individually.

After all of your pictures are uploaded, click the Personalize button. The basic program (without the $40 purchase of the upgrade) gives you six options that you can choose from for your slide show as well as the pace that your slide show will move. Once both are selected, click done or Finish and your slide show are ready to be presented. A link should also appear so that you can post your video on other websites or to an email.

5. At first this website constantly asked me to upgrade to the year-long service. Personally, I feel websites such as that one should be free but you never know. I liked this assignment extremely; it was very simple to follow. I felt I wanted to share some of my pictures and this was a great way to both get my pictures out to the world as well as a great way to do my homework.

RRS Feed

For the RRS feed, I used the Igoogle Application. At first I did not expect to find much interest in the subject of RRS feeds but it eventually grew on me. Originally when I sign onto my computer, MSN.com will appear when I open the internet. Although many of the stories are interesting, I only seem to read the ones that are fascinating. Using IGoogle, I can make my own "homepage" type website that provides me with any information that interests me. It can be anything from sports news, to local news, to world news, to weather, or even just random fun applications! I google is great and I will suggest it in the future.

Delicious

Delicious is a new way to organize all of your favorite pages so that they are just one or two clicks away. You can categorize your pages by tagging, or labling your articles with keywords so that they can be easily found through searches.

Lets say you have an article on Conan O'Brien's new Twitter account. In the search you can type in Conan, Conan O'Brien, O'Brien, Twitter, Coco, or other various keywords that could be related to the article.

Here is my delcious page through the link below.

About Me

Well, where to start? My name is Alexander Joseph Bova the First and I was born September 9, 1987 at 9:35 A.M. in north Indianapolis. I grew up with my older brother Anthony and my mother Sally in the Castleton area of Indianapolis. Growing up I played basketball, baseball, football, rugby, and I wrestled. I love routing for my hometeams such as the Colts and the Pacers and I have been doing so since I was a little kid.

Currently I am in my forth of six years at IUPUI. I am a part of the Elementary Education program, but originally I started in the Pre-Vet program at Purdue before moving home to IUPUI. Since moving to IUPUI I helped to become a founding father of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity on the IUPUI Campus. It is the 299th Installed chapter of the fraternity. For several months, I was the President of the fraternity in a time of need and fulfilled my duties and the fire under the chapter was re-lit. In Spring 2009, I won the IUPUI Campus and Community Life Change Agent Award.
